College Application Process
Where is my child going to attend college? Does she have a reasonable chance of gaining admittance? How many colleges and universities should my son apply to? When do we apply? How does financial aid work? How do scholarships work? How does Bright Futures work? How much does college really cost?
The college process can be daunting. Student First can help you make choices and make the process as manageable as possible. It is ideal to start these conversations early in a high school career. The process intensifies during the Junior year and the beginning of the Senior year.
This can be a stressful time for students and their families. Student First can help students and parents manage this stress. We have had clients attend Penn, Vanderbilt, UF, FSU, Sewanee, Wofford, Rollins and many other schools.
ACT and SAT Preparation
How important is a standardized test score to colleges and universities? Very, very important. There is an entire industry built around test prep. Student First has a track record of helping students improve their test scores. We personalize the experience for each student based on their strengths, weaknesses, and needs. We tutor one-on-one and assign a manageable amount of test-like practice between tutoring sessions.
Your child will develop a plan for each section of the test and feel much more confident in as few as five to ten sessions.
Math Tutoring
Students often need Math tutoring. Student First can tutor students in Math or connect you to talented math tutors. Whether your child needs support in 6th grade math, Algebra, Geometry, or College Calculus, Student First can help.
PERT Prep
The Post Secondary Education Readiness Test (PERT) is used by state colleges (like Santa Fe College) to place students in English and Math classes. Poor PERT scores result in college prep course placements (English and Math courses that do not count for English and Math credit). Many students take the PERT with no preparation and after a long break from school.
Student First can help students prepare for the PERT in as few as two or three sessions.
Small College Athletics Advice
If your child is being recruited by the schools we regularly see on television, you don’t need our help. However, there are many outstanding athletes who can attend excellent colleges and universities and play the sport they love on the Division II, Division III, Junior College (state colleges in Florida), NAIA, and NCCAA level.
The recruiting processes and scholarships are often quite different in non-Division I environments. We can help you be in charge of your own process. There is a growing industry that sells the prospect of scholarships. There are colleges that stay afloat financially by having students pay high tuition to play the sport they love.
We would be happy to help you understand the process and help you put your family in the best possible position. We will NOT promise you a scholarship or charge you thousands of dollars. We have worked with a large number of student-athletes in almost every sport.
Issues at School
In a simple world, young people would enjoy school and be successful socially and academically. In the real world, students have problems at school. We would be happy to consult with you on:
Students who are struggling in school
Students who have been suspended from school
Students who are not on track to graduate
Students who have attendance issues due to illness
Students who need an alternative to traditional school
and many other issues. Your issue will not be a new issue for Student First.
ESE or 504 Issues
Does your child have a documented learning disability? Do you suspect that your child has a learning issue, but that it is not documented? Do your son’s grades suffer because of ADD or ADHD? Does your daughter have a health problem that leads to falling behind in school?
These issues can be very complicated. We have a great deal of experience working with children who have moderate to severe issues. We can help students and their families make educational decisions to reach their goals.
Home School Support
Supporting a home school student takes a great deal of organization and patience. Student First can help provide the structure that students need to be successful. We offer increased support in the most challenging subjects for the student.
GED Prep
Many students who pursue a General Equivalency Diploma lack academic confidence and prefer one-on-one tutoring. Student First can provide that tutoring and review test-taking strategies.
College Success Coaching
College has become harder to navigate than ever before. Many outstanding high school students struggle in college. Student First will review time management and best practices for studying with each client. We monitor progress with an eye on balance. As our clients progress through college, we focus on career preparation (shadowing, internships, work experience, resumes, mock interviews, etc.).
